A new-generation residential energy storage system will soon be available across Africa, Middle East, Asia and other markets.

The BYD Battery-Box LV5.0+ was recently unveiled by BYD Energy Storage, a division of integrated renewable energy solutions provider BYD, at Solar & Storage Live Africa in Johannesburg.

The company notes that 1.1-million Battery-Box systems have been installed globally and asserts that the system’s safety and reliability are key factors in its success. The previous generation low voltage Battery-Box LV5.0 system has been available in South Africa since 2024. The modular battery storage solution is designed to be flexible, easy to install and can be scaled from 5.12 kWh to 163.84 kWh. 

The latest generation of the system offers better performance, higher power output and a longer warranty. It can also be combined with BYD Energy Storage’s Power-Box hybrid inverters as a complete solution, or it can be used with low-voltage inverters from a range of inverter providers.

Fast cabling and one-button auto commission and one-button auto-configuration of compatible inverters, enables the system to complete an installation by adapting to the inverter.

Additional features include:

• High safety standards with 4-level safety include:
• Cell safety with lithium-iron-phosphate, or LFP, cells and explosion-proof drop design
• Module safety offering thermal runaway prevention and real-time temperature management
• Pack safety with 24/7 real-time monitoring of key parameters of the battery system as well as insulation, electrical safety and short-circuit protection
• System safety including real-time diagnosis of key components and an automatic warning and insurance cut-offs
• Reliability backed by a 10-year warranty and compliance with national standards such as UL 1642/IEC 62619/RED/EMC/UN38.3.
• High performance underpinned by fast charge and discharge capabilities.

Intelligent management includes 24/7 online monitoring and analysis, remote diagnosis and over-the-air, or OTA, updates and real-time data and energy flow using a BYD Energy app that enables remote diagnosis and self-fault detection.

BYD’s single-phase hybrid inverters Power-Box SL3/3.68/4.6/5/6K and Power-Box SL7/8/10K come with a 10-year warranty, including lightning protection and 24/7 electrical safety monitoring.
